SEAOSC President's Message August 2026 - Connecting Beyond the Office

This past week we took a break from our computers, project deadlines, and RFIs to meet on
course at Coyote Hills for our annual golf tournament. It was a great reminder of the
importance of slowing down every once in a while and reconnecting with colleagues. Thank you
to everyone who participated, volunteered, and sponsored the event and helped make it
another great annual SEAOSC tradition.
Next up, the 2026 SEAOC Convention is just around the corner! Later this month, we’ll convene
in Scottsdale, Arizona to reconnect with our peers from across California and explore topics
ranging from the latest technical innovations, code updates, and resilience and sustainability to
leadership, professional growth, and opportunities for emerging engineers. I look forward to
seeing you there and connecting between presentations. Some of my most memorable
Convention moments have come from the conversations in the lobby or lounge outside the
presentation rooms, reconnecting with longtime colleagues, exchanging ideas with engineers
from across the state, and sharing perspectives on the future of our profession. I’m excited to
continue these conversations with you in Arizona!

Also, our SEAOSC Wood Design 101 Education Course will be starting shortly. This course will
cover the fundamentals of timber design including typical roof/floor layouts and details, gravity
and lateral design, connection design, common plan check issues, and fire design
considerations. Whether you didn’t have the opportunity to take a timber design course in
college or you’re simply looking for a refresher, this course is a great opportunity to strengthen
