Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Have questions about SEAOC membership? You're in the right place. Browse the topics below or reach out to us directly if you don't find what you're looking for.
About Membership
What is the difference between SEAOC and the regional Member Organizations? −
SEAOC is the statewide association. It sets the strategic direction, leads advocacy efforts, develops technical resources, and represents California's structural engineers at the national level. The four regional Member Organizations (SEAONC, SEAOSC, SEAOCC, and SEAOSD) are where day-to-day membership lives. They run local events, education programs, and committees for their regions. When you join an MO, your membership automatically includes SEAOC.
Which MO should I join? −
Generally, you join the MO that serves the region where you live or work. SEAONC serves the bay area and northern California, SEAOSC serves Los Angeles, Orange County, and surrounding southern California, SEAOCC serves the central valley region, and SEAOSD serves San Diego county. If you're not sure which region fits you, our membership page can help you find the right fit.
Can I be a member of more than one MO? −
No. You should select which MO fits the region where you live or work the best and join that MO. The reason we discourage dual membership is that you are paying for access twice by being a member of two MOs. If you're interested in attending an event from another MO, you are able to do so as a member of SEAOC.
Do I have to be a licensed structural engineer to join? −
No. Only the member type "Member SE" has a restriction regarding being a licensed structural engineer. You can find information regarding the other member type requirements and benefits of membership on the "Membership Page".
What happens to my SEAOC membership if I move to a different region? −
If you relocate to a different part of California, you can transfer your membership to the MO serving your new region. Contact seaoc@seaoc.org to alert us of this change and we will transfer your membership to the new MO.
Joining & Dues
How do I join? −
Membership in SEAOC starts with joining your regional MO. Visit our membership page to identify your region and start your application.
How much does membership cost? −
Membership costs will vary by region and by member type. Visit the membership page to find out more information on the membership cost. Generally, the cost will range from $0 for student membership, to $330 for Member SE.
When do dues renew? −
Membership dues renew on a calendar basis (July 1) or on your anniversary of sign up. This is dependent on which MO you join.
Can my firm pay for my membership? −
Yes — many firms support professional association memberships as part of their employee development programs.
Are dues tax-deductible? −
SEAOC is a 501(c)(6) professional association. Dues paid to a 501(c)(6) organization may be deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense, but are not deductible as a charitable contribution. We recommend consulting your tax advisor for guidance specific to your situation.
Member Benefits
What do I get access to as a member? −
Members receive access to continuing education programs, technical seminars, SEAOC publications and resources, committee participation, networking events, the annual SEAOC Convention, and advocacy updates affecting the profession. Benefits vary slightly by MO, so check with your regional organization for a full list.
Do I need to be a member to attend SEAOC events? −
Many SEAOC and MO events are open to non-members, though members typically receive discounted registration rates.
How do I get involved in committees? −
Committee opportunities are available through both SEAOC and your regional MO. Members can express interest in committees through their MO or by reaching out to SEAOC directly.
Does SEAOC membership include access to NCSEA resources? −
SEAOC is the largest member organization of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA), however only 'Member SE' and 'Member' types are recognized as individual members of NCSEA. Contact seaoc@seaoc.org if you have any questions.
Students & Early Career
Is there a student membership option? −
Yes! Each MO has student membership. Most student membership is zero to low cost.
I just got licensed — what membership category is right for me? −
Congratulations! As a licensed structural engineer, you can access the Member SE type.
