Senior Design Engineer - Structural Focus

Position Description
Structural Focus is seeking Senior Design Engineers to join our team!
Since 2001, our Los Angeles firm has designed several million square feet of new structures and rehabilitated hundreds of existing buildings, including many designated National Historic structures. Whether the projects involve adaptive re-use, detailed laboratories, acoustically sensitive post-production facilities, performance spaces, education facilities, or corporate headquarters, the Structural Focus team provides a comprehensive effort to achieve project goals and create the facility envisioned—on time and on budget.

In this role, a Senior Design Engineer provides technical expertise, management assistance, and project planning services while continuing their personal growth in technical and professional areas.
Position Duties
- Perform significant technical tasks as assigned by Project Engineers and Project Managers.
- Assist with the coordination, review, and completion of tasks performed by Structural Designers.
- Interact effectively with clients, project team members, and external partners.
- Review work throughout the design process to ensure technical accuracy and alignment with firm quality control standards.
- Assist Project Managers with drafting proposals, developing project scopes of work, creating task lists for technical staff, and tracking project budgets.
- Maintain top-tier client service by responding to communications (emails/phone messages) promptly to ensure client satisfaction and continued loyalty.
- Ensure project teams remain informed and aligned on client communications and project updates.
- Actively participate in professional organizations (e.g., SEAOSC, EERI, AISC) and join at least one professional committee related to structural or seismic engineering.
- Pursue ongoing professional development through technical classes, seminars, conferences, and presentations to continuously expand technical and seismic engineering knowledge.
- Participate in in-house activities to improve firm operations and attend regular staff meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience.
- Education: B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and M.S. degree in Structural Engineering (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Licensure: Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of California.
- Technical Skills: Strong technical competence with demonstrated knowledge of fundamental engineering principles and the ability to apply direction from senior technical staff.
- Physical Capability: Ability to conduct site visits and structural inspections, which may require climbing ladders/scaffolding, walking long distances, or entering areas with limited egress/confined spaces.
