SEAOC-NCSEA SSDM Webinar Series
REGISTER VIA THE NCSEA WEBSITE!
SEAOC and the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) have teamed up to present a new four-week webinar series featuring the newly published Structural/Seismic Design Manuals. Led by some of the leading practitioners and educators in structural and seismic engineering, the series provides practical insight into applying today’s seismic design provisions.
Through a series of detailed design examples, the webinars will explore key topics including design spectral response acceleration parameters, seismic base shear, diaphragm design forces using the alternate diaphragm provisions, multi-story cold-formed steel and wood-framed buildings, reinforced concrete walls with coupling beams, and steel special moment frames.
Each webinar will connect the big-picture concepts behind the IBC and ASCE 7 provisions with the practical details of applying them to real-world design. The series is designed for practicing structural engineers, designers, building officials, plan reviewers, educators, and students seeking practical, code-based approaches to seismic design and detailing.
Schedule of Events
November 10, 2026: Applying ASCE 7-22: New and Updated Examples from the SEAOC 2024 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manuals, Volume 1,
Presented by Mason Thau, P.E., 60 mins
This technical webinar highlights key updates in Volume 1 of the 2024 IBC SEAOC Structural/Seismic Design Manual. The presentation will walk through Design Examples 1 and 29, updated to reflect changes in ASCE 7-22, including the new multi-period response spectrum provisions.
The webinar will also introduce Design Example 62, a new example illustrating the increasingly relevant alternate design provisions for diaphragms in ASCE 7. The examples provide practical insight into applying these updated provisions to structural design.
November 17, 2026: Design of Multi-Story Cold-Formed Steel Buildings: Code Updates and Practical Considerations from the SEAOC 2024 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manuals, Volume 2,
Presented by Jeff Ellis, P.E., S.E., 90 mins
This presentation provides a practical overview of key code changes affecting the design of cold-formed steel (CFS) lateral-resisting systems, illustrated through a three-story CFS-framed building. Topics include floor framing system selection, overturning restraint design and detailing, wall stud bracing, and application of overstrength and expected-strength factors.
The presentation draws on the SEAOC SSDM design example, updated for the 2024 IBC and referenced AISI S100/S200-series standards, with a focus on practical design and detailing considerations for structural engineers.
November 24, 2026: Seismic Design of Concrete Walls with Coupling Beams: Practical Lessons from 2024 SEAOC IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manuals, Volume 3
Presented by Karl Telleen, S.E., 60 mins
This in-depth webinar provides practical guidance on the seismic design and detailing of reinforced concrete structural walls, using Example 2 from the SEAOC Seismic Design Manual, Volume III—a six-story concrete wall with openings and coupling beams.
The presentation will explore key design considerations, including desired wall behavior, flexural and shear design, lap splices, the interaction with gravity framing, boundary element detailing, and coupling beam design. Drawing on lessons learned from past earthquakes, code requirements, and research, the presentation will highlight practical approaches for designing and detailing concrete walls to achieve reliable seismic performance.
December 1, 2026: Seismic Design of Steel Special Moment Frames: SEAOC 2024 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual, Volume 4,
Presented by Kevin Moore, S.E., F.SEAOC, F.SEI, 90 mins
This webinar explores the seismic design and detailing of structural steel special moment frames (SMF), focusing on expected seismic behavior, connection demands, and the distribution of inelastic response. Key considerations include flexural, axial, and shear demands on beams, columns, and beam-column connections, as well as detailing for ductile performance during extreme earthquake shaking.
The presentation follows the SEAOC Seismic Design Manual design example and the requirements of ASCE 7 and AISC 341, 358, and 360. Particular attention will be given to the prequalified Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connection and its application in the seismic force-resisting system.
