This recorded webinar is based upon the design examples “Concrete Shear Walls & Concrete Coupling Beams” in Volume 3 of the SEAOC 2015 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual series.
SEAOC Seismic Design Manual Volume 3 Example 1 covers seismic design of a solid (cantilever) concrete wall, and Example 2 is a concrete wall with openings and coupling beams. Both examples will be presented in parallel, focusing on key concepts including: desired behavior of concrete walls, design for flexure, bar cut-offs and lap splices, design for shear, effect of gravity framing, detailing of wall boundaries, detailing of coupling beams, and wall stiffness. The presentation will draw on observations and lessons learned from past earthquakes, in addition to code requirements and recommendations from research.

Karl Telleen is a Senior Engineer with Maffei Structural Engineering in San Francisco. He has 12 years of professional experience including seismic evaluation and retrofit design of existing concrete wall buildings, design of new concrete structures, and seismic peer review of high-rise concrete wall buildings. He completed a Fulbright Fellowship studying high-performance concrete materials in Switzerland in 2010, and he performed post-earthquake reconnaissance work studying concrete buildings in Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake. He participated in the ATC-94 project studying the performance of reinforced concrete buildings in the 2010 Chile Earthquake. With co-author Joe Maffei, Karl authored the reinforced concrete wall design examples of the 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2015 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manuals.

About the SEAOC 2015 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM)
The SEAOC Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM), throughout its many editions, has served the purpose of illustrating good seismic design and the correct application of building-code provisions. The SSDM has bridged the gap between the treatment of topics in the building code and ASCE 7, the SEAOC Blue Book (Recommended Lateral Force Requirements and Commentary) and real-world decisions that designers face in their practice.
The SSDM uses example buildings to illustrate code-compliant designs engineered to achieve good performance under seismic loading. The examples address the full range of seismic design considerations, from conceptual level through details of connections and load path. In some cases simply complying with building-code requirements does not ensure good seismic response; here the SSSDM makes recommendations for exceeding the minimum code requirements in such cases, with discussion of the reasons for doing so.
The newly released 2015 SEAOC SSDM has updated and revised the examples for consistency with the 2015 edition of the International Building Code.
