SEAOC Releases 2020 Practice Guidelines
By Mark Gilligan, SE
Chair, SEAOC Professional Practice Committee
SEAOC’s Recommended Guidelines for the Practice of Structural Engineering in California has been updated and is now available for download on the SEAOC website. The guidelines were last updated in 1999 and has served our membership as a valuable “go to” resource. Many of our younger members may not be familiar with the Guidelines and how the nature of our practices has evolved. The Guidelines have been updated in response to this.
The Guidelines provide tools to help the engineer define scope of services, guidance on services provided during construction. The Guidelines make recommendations regarding professional conduct and the selection of structural engineering services. Guidance is also provided for the engineer involved with a peer review as well as when a structural engineer is acting as an expert witness.
Besides updating the existing recommendations, the Guidelines have introduced recommendations related to sustainability services and BIM.
The Professional Practice Committee is committed to making these guidelines a valuable resource. It is not the intention that we should wait another 20 years before updating the Guidelines, rather it is our intention to regularly issue updates to address the changes in how engineering services are provided and to address issues not currently addressed in the guidelines. To do this we need your comments and suggestions. Please send comments and suggestions to your member organization’s delegates to the SEAOC Professional Practice Committee
