SEAOC Wind Design for Solar Arrays PV2-2017 is now available

The SEAOC Wind Committee and SEAOC Solar Photovoltaic Systems Sub-Committee are pleased to announce the publication of their report PV2-2017 “Wind Design for Solar Arrays.” The 2017 edition is an update to the Committee’s 2012 report on this topic, which formed the basis for new design provisions in ASCE 7‑16. PV2-2017 references the ASCE 7‑16 provisions, incorporates knowledge from research since 2012, and provides background and recommendations beyond those in ASCE 7‑16.
 
For rooftop low-profile arrays, examples of new information include:

  • an interior roof zone for large roof sizes
  • ability to consider building corners independently according to the wind vortex conditions
  • optional refinements for array edge factors
  • more flexibility for proportioning gaps between solar modules

For rooftop flush-mounted arrays, an important option related to gap sizes between modules is provided, and refinements to the array edge factor are given. Additional provisions and commentary are provided for wind tunnel testing of solar arrays, and important commentary is added on wind dynamic effects on ground-mounted solar arrays.
