By Megan Stringer, P.E., LEED AP BD+C - Sustainable Design Committee Chair
Over the past year, the Sustainable Design Committee (SDC) has worked hard to promote and improve the Structural Engineer’s role in Sustainable Design. The committee has coordinated activities across local SEA organization’s SDCs, represented SEAOC within the sustainable design community, and improved sustainable education opportunities for all SEAOC members. The committee has also achieved SEAOC representation on the ASCE SEI sustainability committee and USGBC Northern California Chapter.
During this past year, we have worked hard to get the Southern California SDC active again. In addition, the committee has begun coordinating with CALBO to facilitate discussions surrounding structural and fire concerns relating to cross-laminated timber and is pursuing changes within CALGreen to incorporate disaster resilience. In the upcoming year, the committee will present at the 2017 SEI Structures Congress on sustainable strategies every structural engineer should incorporate on their projects. The committee will also continue our publication efforts in the local SEA newsletters, our representation on other sustainably focused groups, and recruitment of new members.
The past year has been a very productive one for the committee and we look forward to another productive year ahead. If you are interested in getting involved, please reach out to your local SDC!
