Job Description:

For the position of Lead Structural Engineer, Build Change is seeking an exceptionally competent structural engineer with experience designing and providing structural observation to earthquake-and hurricane-resistant buildings in locations with developed and enforced building codes and standards. Experience applying this background in the developing context is also desirable. In addition, the successful applicant will have a proven management track record, history of building relationships with partners and clients, and demonstrated ability to communicate technical terms and concepts to non-technical persons. This position reports to the Haiti Director of Programs and Partnerships and receives technical direction from the Director of Engineering.

Technical responsibilities
• Develop thorough, comprehensive understanding of the structural engineering design resources developed by Build Change for use in Haiti for confined masonry, reinforced masonry, multi-story reinforced concrete frame, timber frame, and retrofitting solutions.
• Be responsible for controlling the quality of design information & implementation for projects in Haiti.
• Oversee the revision or development of new structural and architectural drawings, bills of quantity, construction checklists, and training materials as necessary, for partners and clients.
• Solve problems and generate solutions in the field for special cases, especially retrofits and additions to existing buildings.

Job Requirements:

• Minimum 6 years professional experience in structural engineering in a country with well-established building code adoption and enforcement. Additional experience in designing and supervising construction of earthquake- and hurricane- resistant buildings in a developing country is a very strong plus.
• Demonstrated experience working successfully in a team environment, as well as managing a team of technical staff, and delivering outcomes on time.
• Understanding of earthquake- and hurricane-resistant design and construction of confined masonry, reinforced masonry, and timber buildings for both new and retrofit buildings.
• Professional Engineering license (or equivalent) in civil (structural) engineering.
• Familiar with international building codes and guidelines, especially those applicable to the Latin American and Caribbean context.
• Cost estimating, structural design software, and 2d AutoCAD literacy
• Top-performing educational background in structural engineering, with strong earthquake resistant design orientation.
• Hands-on construction experience in masonry, reinforced concrete, and carpentry is helpful.
• Work experience in an elite management setting, or some kind of successful entrepreneurial experience such as starting a field program in a developing country, leading a large event, or starting a business.
• Project management skillset that includes ownership over milestones, work plans, reporting, using computer tools such as Excel and PowerPoint.
• International development experience and willingness to live and work in a post-disaster setting for at least twelve months; experience in Haiti is a strong plus.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
For the position of Lead Structural Engineer, Build Change is seeking an exceptionally competent structural engineer with professional experience designing and supervising the construction of earthquake-resistant buildings in a country with well-established building code adoption and enforcement, and with experience applying this background to engineering design and construction in developing countries. In addition, the successful applicant will have a proven management track record, excellent teamwork skills, a history of building relationships with partners and clients, and demonstrated ability to communicate technical terms and concepts to non-technical persons.

This position reports to the Director of Engineering for technical items and to the Country Director - Nepal for program items.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Responsibilities
• Develop a thorough, comprehensive understanding of the structural engineering design resources developed by Build Change for stone masonry, confined masonry, reinforced masonry, multi-story reinforced concrete frame, timber frame, and retrofitting solutions.
• In collaboration with the Director of Engineering, lead in the development of Nepal-specific technical resources, such as new construction guidelines for different local building types, retrofit guidelines, construction quality checklists and bill of quantity templates.
• Be willing and confident to apply engineering judgment in the absence of code-based guidance.
• Solve problems and generate solutions in the field for special cases, especially retrofits and additions to existing buildings.
• Oversee the revision or development of new structural and architectural drawings, bills of quantity, construction checklists, and training materials as necessary, for partners and clients.
• Be responsible for controlling the quality of design information & implementation for projects in Nepal.
• Ensure technologies and solutions are consistent with Build Change’s philosophy of earthquake- resistance, sustainability, and cultural appropriateness.
• Mentor, train and oversee local engineers, architects, drafters, and other technical staff, including developing the associated training materials and presentations.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
For the position of Design Engineer, Build Change is seeking an exceptionally competent engineer with experience designing earthquake-resistant buildings. In addition, the successful applicant will have a proven leadership and teamwork abilities and a demonstrated ability to communicate technical terms and concepts to non-technical persons.

This position reports to the Lead Structural Engineer in Nepal.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop a thorough, comprehensive understanding of the structural engineering design resources developed by Build Change for stone masonry, confined masonry, reinforced masonry, multi-story reinforced concrete frame, timber frame, and retrofitting solutions.
• Assist in the development of Nepal-specific technical resources, such as new construction guidelines for different local building types, retrofit guidelines, construction quality checklists and bill of quantity templates.
• Assist in solving problems and generating solutions in the field for special cases.
• Assist in the revision or development of new structural and architectural drawings, bills of quantity, construction checklists, and training materials as necessary, for partners and clients.
• Assist in controlling the quality of design information & implementation for projects in Nepal.
• Ensure technologies and solutions are consistent with Build Change’s philosophy of earthquake- resistance, sustainability, and cultural appropriateness.
• Assist in training local engineers, architects, drafters, and other technical staff, including the development of training materials and presentations.
• Prepare monthly reports and contribute to internal and external project reporting.
• Work on technical tasks for other Build Change programs as directed by the Lead Structural Engineer - Nepal or the Director of Engineering.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and a minimum 1 year professional experience in structural engineering or a Master’s degree in civil/structural engineering, with a strong emphasis on seismic engineering principles. Experience in designing and supervising construction of earthquake-resistant buildings in a developing country is a plus.
• Demonstrated experience working successfully in a team environment.
• Understanding of earthquake-resistant design and construction of stone masonry, confined masonry, reinforced masonry, and timber buildings for both new and retrofit buildings.
• Familiar with international building codes and guidelines.
• Cost estimating, structural design software, and 2d AutoCAD literacy.
• Hands-on construction experience in masonry, reinforced concrete, and carpentry is helpful.
• Project management skillset that includes ownership over milestones, work plans, reporting, using computer tools such as Excel and PowerPoint.
• International development experience and willingness to live and work in a post-disaster setting for at least twelve months; experience in Nepal is a strong plus.
• Fluent English is a requirement. Excellent, professional communications skills are required. Fluency in Nepali is a strong plus.

OVERVIEW
The Judicial Council of California is currently recruiting for a Senior Construction Inspectors in its Judicial Branch Capital Programs Office. The Judicial Branch Capital Program Office has responsibility for business and planning, design and construction, and risk management of the state’s courthouses.

The Senior Construction Inspector will perform technical construction inspections of architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing elements during construction or modification of judicial branch building and facilities. Additionally, this position will monitor other inspectors and material testing laboratories performing work on Judicial Council facilities.

This position will work in the Sacramento office. The primary role of this position is to assist the Quality Manager to establish processes for, and to administer the plan review, permitting, and construction inspection of the statewide facility modifications performed by the Facilities Management Unit (FMU). The annual budget for facility modification projects is $65 million for up to 6,000 projects per year in over 500 court facilities. While it will be important for this position to have construction inspection credentials and experience, approximately 70 percent (70%) of the position’s time will be spent in the office performing tasks described above in this paragraph.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Performs inspections of building construction to determine the quality of workmanship and materials used conform to the Contract Documents and California Building Standards Codes requirements and manufacturer’s written installation instructions;
• All required tasks include: footing and foundation; concrete slab and underfoot inspection; steel fabrication and welding; wood and light gage steel framing; lath and gypsum board; fire and smoke resistant penetrations; electrical systems inspection; wet and dry mechanical systems; masonry;
• Pre-inspection of all element sof construction for which State Fire Marshall approval is required;
• Assists the Quality Manager to establish processes to ensure the permitting,commissioning, plan review, and inspection of construction projects as required by the Judicial Branch Capital Program Management Manual.
• Studies project specifications and drawings to become familiar with projects prior to a notice to proceed is issued and ensures that supplement design direction is approved by the appropriate authorities, e.g. State fire Marshal, prior to construction
• Establishes and communicates to Judicial Council Capital Program and Facility Management project managers processes to permit, commission, plan review, inspect construction projects as required by the Judicial Branch Capital Program Management Manual and the California Building Standards Code;
• Maintain a detailed knowledge of the CA Building Standards Code and its referenced related codes and requirements;
• Studies project specifications and drawings to become familiar with projects prior to a notice to proceed is issued and ensures that supplement design direction is approved by the appropriate authorities;
• Verify design is approved prior to construction;
• Verify contractor is registered with the CA Department of Industrial Relations and licensed for the type of construction being performed;
• Request proposals from firms under master contract with the Judicial Council to provide plan review, project inspection, materials testing and special inspections required;
• Work with the project manager to develop the need for and scope of services;
• Perform accident investigation of damage and destruction events in court facilities;
• Upon assignment for the risk management analyst, provide a field inspection and investigation of the cause and origin of a damage and destruction event

WORKING CONDITIONS
• Work occasional evening and weekend hours.
• Required to travel (driving and flying) to assigned projects on a weekly basis.
